Infinite
There are people who believe that there are infinite universes
Each a product of even the tiniest decision
Just as there are people, people like me, who sometimes think of finding their soul mate
This means
That there is a universe where I have already met you
There is a universe
Where you decided to come to my school
And now we’re that couple everyone always talks about
There is a universe where you go to school in the city
But you worked up the courage to get my number
And made me so glad that I have a Charlie Card
There is a universe where I didn’t go to my school
And maybe you didn’t go to yours
But we both chose differently
And we walk the streets of a city I’ll never know, together
It means we have a future.
With every decision that we make we will weave ourselves a story
And sometimes our knitting hands will be so in synch that our collision is inevitable
Maybe I will meet you in the city next month,
Maybe you’ll be in my first class in Law School
Maybe we were once friends since childhood, hesitant to take this to another level
Maybe a million decisions ago our mothers were best friends, our fathers fishing buddies
Maybe in another universe I learned how to fish for you
Darling, these universes spinning a hair’s breadth away but never colliding
Mean that in another universe we are kissing right now
And I can tell you I’ve never tasted anything so good
There is a universe where it has taken us many tries
To be the right place and the right time for each other
There is a universe where it already was love at first sight
There is a universe where your mother took that job in Spain, Kenya, China, Germany
And when we meet my American ears
Will strain to comprehend the declarations of love
You whisper to me in foreign tongue
The theory of us in a million worlds
Means that in another universe you were my first love, and that me will tell our children
That we got it right the first time
In another universe you were only my best love, and that me will tell our children
That I never loved another man like I loved their father
People think that our decisions make clones of us
If this is true
It means that our love is infinite, the greatest love story ever told
There are people who believe that there are infinite universes
Each a product of even the tiniest decision
This means
That there is a universe in which I decided
Not to write you this poem
And it means
That there is a universe in which we will go on and on forever
And never actually meet.
I hope it is not this one
